MS-81 Fluid-Structure Interaction in Structural Engineering and Health Monitoring

Vikram Pakrashi, University College Dublin

The financial competitiveness of renewable energy devices (wind, wave etc.) is directly linked to reduced cost of operation throughout their life-cycle and Structural Health Monitoring can be helpful in this regard. Scientifically, such devices pose significant challenge since their on-site behaviour is usually unknown and several designs, features of interest, performance markers and damage features are still at the stage of development. Nonlinearity is a standard problem and access is a major issue. Thus, the sector of renewable energy comes with a whole new set of challenges for Structural Health Monitoring at a very fundamental level and covering the broad fields of engineering mechanics, signal processing, sensors and communications and development of novel algorithms and markers for such detection. Other key challenges include (but not limited to) estimating remaining service life, understanding damage in such systems, estimating effects of intervention like control systems and structural rehabilitation, along with developing short-term/real-time tools for such detection. This Minisymposium will investigate these aspects in detail.

Topics of Interest Include:

  • On/offshore Wind and Tidal turbines & Wave Device monitoring and novel SHM methods
  • Real-Time identification of features of interest
  • Scaled Testing in tanks and basins
  • SHM data communication, sensors and systems
  • Signal processing, system identification & digital twinning
